Earthquake in Türkiye, Syria claims over 5000 lives

ANKARA: Central Türkiye and N.W. Syria have been struck by a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on Monday (6th of Feb 2023) morning [4.17AM (117GMT)] claiming well over 5000 lives.

According to sources 5000 people are trapped beneath the rubble of batiments that collapsed due to the tremors that shook the two countries early winter morning as well as Cyprus and Lebanon.

It is pertinent to mention here that 100 aftershocks too jolted the region.

ANKARA: President Erdogan informed: “Tonight at 04:17, we were shaken by the biggest disaster since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake that we underwent in the last century. So far, 912 of our citizens have lost their lives and 5,385 of our citizens have been injured.

Commenting on the rescue operation, being carried out in his country, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan informed: “Our search and rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the areas affected by the earthquake.

“Our Ministry of Interior and Health AFAD, Governorships and all other institutions started their work rapidly”.

President Erdogan, pointing out that the number of dead and injured citoyens was augmenting, further informed that 2470 people had been rescued. According to the President 2818 buildings had collapsed. He told that 9000 personnel were engaged in rescue operations: “We have started to be contacted for international aid. Besides offers of assistance by NATO and the EU, 45 countries have reached out to us,” he added.


President Dr. Arif Alvi Tweeted: “In this hour of grief, I and the Pakistani nation stand in solidarity with the people of Turkiye and Syria.”

PM Shehbaz Sharif stated: “We send our heartfelt condolences & most sincere sympathies to the government and the people of Syria who have suffered major human and material losses from the devastating earthquake early this morning.

“Deeply saddened by the news of a massive earthquake that struck southeastern region of Türkiye.

I send my profound condolences & most sincere sympathies to my brother President RTErdogan & brotherly people of Türkiye on the loss of precious lives & damage to infrastructure.

US Official took to the Twitter to state: “The US is profoundly concerned by today’s destructive earthquake in Turkiye & Syria.

I have been in touch with Turkish officials to relay that we stand ready to provide any & all needed assistance.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with Turkiye.”
