ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today stayed the notification of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Saeed Ghani’s victory in the PS-114 elections.
The decision was announced during a hearing of a petition by MQM-Pakistan candidate Kamran Tessori for a vote recount.
Ghani was declared the winner after he secured 23,840 votes. On the second number was Kamran Tessori with 18,106 votes.
However, MQM-P had claimed that the PPP had used unfair means to win the elections and requested the ECP to order the returning officer to conduct a recount of votes.
“We had demanded bio-metric machines and army to be deployed for the elections but the request was not complied with,” an official from MQM-P said.
“MQM-P was winning the election until last moments,” he claimed, adding that the PPP has always been on the third or fourth position in the constituency.
The Chief Election Commissioner adjourned the hearing until July 17 and issued a notification for Saeed Ghani to appear at the next hearing.
