Edhi lives on: SIUT transplants his eyes into two blind people!

SANA MAHMOOD

KARACHI: Legendary philanthropist, who has given six decades of his life to the cause of helping the poor of the poorest, is alive in the minds. He also lives by means of corneas he donated.

Doctors of Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) here on Saturday have revived the sight of the two unsighted through corneal grafting replacing the damaged corneal tissue by healthy tissue donated by Edhi.

According to SIUT Abdul Sattar Edhi had pledged his organs a long time ago making him among the first of the two thousand donors registered with the Institute. Edhi’s wife, son and other members of the family, in order to fulfill his will, gladly donated both his eyes.

The cornea grafting surgery was performed in the late afternoon by a team of surgeons of the department of ophthalmology at SIUT: “ The death of Edhi Sahab  has given vision to two most deserving persons and this is how he had wished his legacy to continue after death.”

It is pertinent to inform that Edhi breathed his last in the Intensive Care Unit where he was on ventilator.  He was getting treatment from SIUT for the last one decade. In 2013 it was diagnosed that he was surfacing from kidney failure. As a result he was on thrice-a-week dialysis.
