Fake degree: Jahangiri no more IHC judge

Crime Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A division bench of High Court here, headed by CJ Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, issuing the judgement on Thursday (18th Dec, 2025) ordered that Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri ceased to hold the office of the IHC judge forthwith.

Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri ceased to hold the office of the IHC judge forthwith.

The bench noted that Jahangiri did not hold a law degree when he was appointed an additional judge of the IHC: “…as well as at the time of his confirmation as a judge of the Islamabad High Court, he was not holding a valid LLB degree, which is a prerequisite for enrolment as an advocate

“When he could not be considered as an advocate, then consequently he was not eligible for elevation as a judge of a high court in terms of the requirements of Article 175-A of the Constitution.”

Chairman PTI Barrister Gohar Khan, took to the X to state: “IHC Order against Justice Jehangiri – an unprecedented and troubling move to remove judges from office. I take strong exception to the Order. It further erodes judicial independence. The constitutional oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution becomes meaningless if judges are unable to protect and defend themselves within their own court. This is not the first case how judges have been unceremoniously removed from their offices – but let this be the LAST – with restoration of Justice Jehangiri.

On 5th Sept, 2024 Sindh High Court, citing Article 10-A I (the right to fair trial) suspended the Karachi University’s decision to revoke the degree of Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri.

It may be recalled that the Syndicate of KU on 31st August, 2024 had cancelled the degree and enrolment of IHC’s Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri (after four decades) on the recommendation of its Unfair Means (UFM) Committee.
