KARACHI: ‘Kalyon ki Mala’, was one of the most popular musical TV programs of 70’s. Hosted by composer Sohail Rana, it used to feature dozens of closely-seated children swaying while learning how to sing.
Though Nazia and her brother Zohaib always claimed to be self-taught, one can trace back their first appearance right to Sohail Rana’s Kalyon ki Mala.
She was born in Karachi 51 years ago and started singing at the age of ten. She and her sibling eventually became Sub-Continent’s most popular singers.
Some sixty million records of their songs were sold worldwide. After attaining the status of Queen of Pop, she died of lung cancer fifteen years ago on August 13th, 2000 in London.
This scribe met her at the residence of French Consul General here at Marie Road. At that time she was working for UN.
