BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA): Eighteen-year-old female shooter, identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed 9 and injured 25 others, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, gunned-down her mother (39) and step-brother (11) in a nearby home, before committing suicide here on Tuesday (10th Feb, 2025).
According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police, one severely injured person succumbed to wounds on the way to a medical facility, 7 bodies (including that of the shooter) were found inside the school, two more corpses were recovered from a nearby house.
Police, maintaining that the motive was not known, further told that two victims were hospitalised with serious bullet wounds, whereas, 25 others were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Due to strict gun laws Mass shootings used to be viewed by Canadians as something that happens elsewhere, but the ogre struck at home on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney proclaimed on Wednesday (11th Feb, 2026) that all flags on Parliament Hill and federal buildings across the country would be flown at half mast for a week. Th said that the country was in mourning after a tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge: “It’s a very difficult day for the nation. Parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers in Tumbler Ridge will wake up without someone they love. The nation mourns with you, Canada stands with you…We will get through this, we will learn from this, but right now it’s a time to come together as Canadians always do in these terrible situations.”
Taking to the X German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated: “Our thoughts are with the people of Tumbler Ridge as they mourn their families, friends, and loved ones. I wish those who were injured a swift recovery.” PM Narendra Modi said India “stands in solidarity with the people of Canada in this moment of profound grief.” President Emmanuel Macron assured that France stood with Canadians. Macron said his thoughts were with the families of the victims, the injured, and the entire educational community.
