ISLAMABAD: First phase of Gwadar Port has been completed and it is operational, National Assembly Standing Committee on Ports and Shipping informed Wednesday.
The Committee held a meeting chaired by Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah in Islamabad to review the progress on the development works on the port.
A statement issued by the Standing Committee claimed that the first phase of Gwadar port with three multipurpose berths having a total quay length of 602 metres is fully operational.
Earlier, a 61-member delegation from the Chinese province of Xingjian led by General Secretary of Communist Party Zhang Chunxian reached Gwadar on Monday to inaugurate Gwadar Port Free Zone.
Speaking on the occasion, Chunxian said China and Pakistan are strengthening business and friendly ties day by day and China would invest in the social sector in Gwadar.
Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain said other phases of the Gwadar port will start functioning by next year.
Tanveer said several mega projects will be started to strengthen the country’s economy once the Gwadar port is completed.
He also expressed the confidence that energy crisis will be overcome and terrorism eradicated during the tenure of the present government.
