ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Nicolas Galey’s address on the occasion of 2nd France Alumni day of Int’l Graduates (Friday 24th May, 2024):

Dear Members of the Business and Education communities,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Distinguished guests,

Welcome to the French Residence to celebrate the second edition of Alumni Days in Pakistan!

This is not the first time that we have organized an event in this house with French former students from Pakistan. Since last year, “French Alumni Day” has been held every year in May in France and around the world including in Pakistan, to bring together and celebrate international graduates from French higher education establishments,

Other initiatives were also organized through the year and the embassy has actively worked to revive the connections among the Alumni community. Earlier this week, an event took place at the Alliance française in Karachi with our Consul general there. Next Friday, it will be for the Alliance française in Lahore to receive French Alumni of Pundjab. Let me thank and congratulate all those who contributed to these Alumni Days in these three cities.

This year, we wanted to innovate a little and make more than a gathering of former students in France ; our objective, which we hope you’ll share, is to demonstrate that being part of this network of alumni is an asset for you as well as for the companies or entities you are working with, and for Pakistan as a whole.

So, with the support of Campus France and the Pakistan-France Business Alliance, our bilateral Chamber of commerce – many thanks to them –  we put the focus on “Connecting talents with global careers”.

Our Alumni Days aim this year to be an opportunity for networking, for exchanges between all those who have had an academic experience in France, recent or less recent ; to share contacts and to organize meetings in the future between smaller groups of alumni who live in the same areas, or who work in similar sectors. It is also an opportunity for you, in a few minutes, to interact with our colleagues at the Embassy, in particular the economic and cooperation departments, with our friends from the Pakistan-France Business Association, and with representatives of Campus France – which is the only official agency responsible for supporting – free of charge – foreign students who wish to study in France.

Let me now say a few words about our strategy to attract more Pakistani students to France.

In 2023, more than 400 Pakistani students or researchers chose France for various educational and training opportunities. For this year, we expect a signifiable increase as, only from January to now, Campus France has received more than 500 candidatures.

This very encouraging result, obtained in a very short time, is due on the one hand to the efforts which were undertaken by all the actors that I have cited but also to a significant increase in scholarships and the strengthening of Campus France staff in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

Another initiative produced excellent results: the “Choose France” operation, which brought together representatives of French higher education establishments in the same three cities, allowing Pakistani students to have a very broad overview of the offer of university degrees available in France, in French or in English.

The third edition of Choose France in Pakistan will take place next October.

But there is life after studies! In this regard, we strongly believe that professional activity and education have to go hand in hand, in order to make Pakistan stronger and to bolster ties between our two countries.

Values and skills such as evolution in a multicultural environment, resilience and the spirit of challenge are at the heart of the educational project provided in France, and are the key asset of our network of former students.

In Pakistan, large international French groups like L’Oréal, Schneider Electric, Total Energies, Alstom are actively looking for highly qualified collaborators who have the necessary taste for global careers and an ability to adapt in different countries and corporate cultures.

To conclude, let me mention the results of the last Ernst & Young study, which lists annually the number of foreign investment projects in Europe. The 2024 survey shows that, for the fifth consecutive year, France has managed to retain its top place in the European attractiveness rankings, followed by UK and Germany.

This attractiveness is the result of a wide series of assets that investors find in France, in terms of legislation, infrastructure and support to businesses. And of course, among these assets, you find the quality of training and qualification of the workforce.

It is this qualification that foreign students come to obtain in France, also knowing that studies in French establishments are generally much cheaper than in other countries thanks to government subsidies to universities, knowing also that spending a few months or a few years in France is; I believe, a nice and exciting experience. We are certainly very pleased with the rapid increase in the number of Pakistani students wishing to study in France. As former students in France, you are best placed to ensure this development continues. Because the best argument to convince more Pakistanis to choose France for their studies is your experience in France, and how it was an asset upon your return to Pakistan.

Once again, a big thank you to all of you, for your presence this evening of course but also for making this network of former students active and dynamic, and for being the ambassadors of French higher education in Pakistan.

Merci, Shukria, thank you.
