ECP prepared to hold elections on 11th Feb, 24

ISLAMABAD: The Counsel of ECP, Sajeel Swati, (claiming that the process of drawing of constituencies would end by 29th January, 2023) had informed the SCP on Thursday (2nd of November, 2023) that his client was prepared to hold the General Elections on Sunday 11th of February, 2024.

A delegation of ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja called on the President at Aiwan-e-Sadr in presence of AGP Mansoor Usman Awan and after discussing the matter went back to the offices of ECP.

Later, ECP sent a letter to the President advising him to hold the elections on 11th of February, 2024.

Earlier, ECP was directed by the CJP Qazi Faez Isa by means of a written order to confer with President Alvi on the date of general elections: “Let the ECP meet with the President of Pakistan today (2nd of Nov 2023) and the date for holding general elections in Pakistan be appointed.”

It is pertinent to mention here that earlier in the day a three-member bench (comprising CJP Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan) hearing a set of petitions apropos holding polls within 90 days, had issued notices to ECP and Fed Govt for their opinion apropos this case.

Meanwhile, SCP has ruled that the date of polls was to be announced by the president and by not doing so he acted against the constitution. Chief Justice made it clear that now election date would now be announced by the SCP.
