Harassment case: PM directs action against FIA officials for negligence

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday ordered strict action against the officials of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) over failure to decide on repeated complaints of harassment by a woman.

The prime minister directed the Director General FIA to immediately suspend the involved FIA officials to ensure a transparent inquiry, the Prime Minister’s Office said. He stressed provision of relief to the woman at the earliest, saying that no complaint should be ignored. The woman had lodged a complaint with Pakistan Citizen Portal against FIA officials, who took no action over her five-time request of harassment during December 16, 2019 to June 13, 2021.

On facing harassment, the woman had quit her job at a university and approached the FIA. On non-cooperation by the FIA officials, she allegedly made an attempt of suicide. The PM Office said despite reopening the complaint twice, the FIA failed to fulfill its responsibility. The Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit in this regard issued a letter to the DG FIA for an inquiry of the officials concerned. The inquiry report will be submitted to the prime minister on 20th of July, 2021.

Earlier, PM Imran Khan has ordered the Establishment Division by means of a letter to take action against Additional IGP Hyderabad region Dr Jamil Ahmed for financial and moral corruption, misuse of authority and undesirable activities. In the correspondence PM noted: “According to an information report, place before the Prime Minister, Dr. Jameel Ahmed, (BPS/21), presently posted as AIG Police. Hyderabad, is involved in financial and moral corruption, misuse of authority and undesirable activities. Reportedly, the officer is heading fifteen districts and allegedly collecting 1.5 to 2 million from each district on monthly basis; besides taking share on postings/transfers of under command police officials.

“He is also stated to have illegally occupied 3 x rooms at Circuit House, Hyderabad, his two sons are misusing their father’s position and carrying out firing practice in Circuit House which is located in populated area. In view of above, the Prime Minister has desired that Establishment Division, being cadre administrator, shall take further action to formally proceed against the officer, on the aforesaid allegations, in terms of rule 18(2) of Civil Servants (Efficiency and Discipline) Rules, 2020.”

It is pertinent to mention here that in the month of April, 2021 the Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Mahar had annulled the initiative taken by AIG Jameel Ahmed apropos creation of a Regional Crime Control Cell  harboring shady (retired or sacked) personnel. Top Cop stated that Regional Crime Control Cell had been malevolently created in contravention of rules and directions issued time and again by his office.

The so called ‘line’ overseen of the dubious characters were also allegedly involved in smuggling of ‘gutka’ and ‘mawa’ from India and oil from Iran. According to details a number of officials working at the AIG’s office had provided statements insinuating at the dubious activities going on there. As a result on 9th day of April, the IGP ordered: “Any such special cell working at district, range or region level shall be disbanded forthwith as it is illegal and brings bad name to police department!”
