Hold polling in Punjab on 14th May: SCP

ISLAMABAD: Terming the ECP’s decision apropos postponing the elections in Punjab till 8th day of October, 2023, the 3-member bench of the SCP has ordered to hold polling in Punjab on 14th May, 2023.

The three-member bench headed by CJP Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan gave the verdict reserved on Monday 3rd of April, 2023.

ECP’s 22nd March, 2023 decision of postponing the elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (till 8th of October, 2023) has been declared null and void.

Since incumbent government had claimed that due to deteriorating law and order situation of the country and lack of funds, elections could not be held, Ministry of Defense submitted its report which was consulted by the bench.

Reinstating the previous schedule of elections with minor adjustments, SCP has ordered the Federal Government to get help of Armed Forces/Paramilitary Rangers and provide Rs. 21 billion to the ECP by 10th of April, 2023 enabling it to hold the polls.

Punjab Assembly Election Program announced by SCP:

1) 10th day of April, 2023: The last day for filing appeals apropos rejection of nomination papers;

2) 17th day of April, 2023: The last day for deciding appeals;
