Bilquis Edhi passes away

KARACHI: Philanthropist and humanitarian Bilquis Bano Edhi passed away at a private hospital here on Friday (15th of April, 2022) at the age of 74. 

Taking to the Twitter Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif stated: “The passing of Bilquis Edhi is a huge loss for the nation. An incredible woman in her own right, she stood by Edhi sb. like a rock & together they set up an example of human compassion & ran one of the largest philanthropic organisations of the world. May her soul rest in peace!”

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi Tweeted: “My sincere condolences on the passing of Bilquis Edhi. Her life long dedication to humanitarian work touched the lives of people across the globe. People in India too remember her fondly. May her soul rest in peace.”

 

A professional nurse, Bilquis Bano Mehdi headed the Bilquis Edhi Foundation. For more than sixty years  she attempted to assuage the miseries of the suffering masses all over Pakistan and also abroad.

Due to her persuasion, instead of resorting to infanticide, more than 42,000 unwanted babies were dropped into the cradles placed outside the Edhi centers all over Pakistan.

Bilquis Bano Edhi had been awarded a number of national and foreign awards including Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the Lenin Peace Prize, Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice (2015), and the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service, that she received along with her husband Abdul Sattar Edhi in 1986.

She had been declared the Person of the Decade by The Impact Hallmarks, along with human rights rapporteur of the United Nations Prof. Yanghee Lee and the US ethicist Stephen Soldz. She was proclaimed the most impactful person of the first two decades of the 21st century.

Laid to Rest: 

Bilquis Edhi FuneralKARACHI: Bilquis Bano Edhi was laid to rest here at the Mewa Shah Graveyard on Saturday (16th of April, 2022). Namaz-e-Janaza of Bilquis Bano Edhi, that was held at Memon Mosque, was attended by a large number of people including the Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah. Meanwhile, the Provincial Govt. had declared one-day mourning that was observed on Saturday 16th day of April, 2022.
