REYKJAVIK: Iceland’s new Prime Minister Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson joins the house on Thursday after his predecessor resigned over the Panama Papers scandal.
Former PM of Iceland Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson quit on Tuesday after his hidden offshore account was revealed in the ‘Panama Papers’, resulting the mass protests by people all over the country, demanding him to step down.
The new PM Johannsson is former fisheries and agriculture minister. Johannsson and his cabinet were sworn in by President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson in a ceremony held at the presidential residence in Reykjavik, the coastal capital.
According to reports, the new PM is set to take Iceland into legislative elections expected in the autumn.
