THE HAGUE: ICJ has stated on Friday (19th of July) that continued presence of Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory was illegal and that it should come to an end as rapidly as possible.
“Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have been established and are being maintained in violation of international law,” maintained the UN’s top court. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will promptly forward to the UNGA World court’s opinion. It is pertinent to mention here that his is the first time the ICJ has delivered a position on the legality of the 57-year occupation.
Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu retorted: “No false decision in The Hague will distort this historical truth, just as the legality of Israeli settlement in all the territories of our homeland cannot be contested.” The ICJ advisory has been hailed by the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
