IFJ, PFUJ organise a training workshop for Nawabshah journalists

NAWABSHAH: A training workshop for journalists was organized by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) with the collaboration of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Nawabshah Union of Journalists.

NAWABSHAH: PFUJ Vice President and Program Coordinator Sheher Bano, while explaining the purpose of the program, said that the aim of this project, which is being organised with the financial support of the National Endowment for Democracy, is to discuss the issues faced by journalists and develop recommendations for their solutions, and do the capacity building of journalists through training.

The recommendations gathered here and from other places will be discussed with relevant authorities to move towards their final resolution, with the goal of improving the working conditions for journalists.

She further mentioned that training helps journalists become aware of their rights, and this training series will continue in other districts of Sindh as well.

Sheher Bano added that if the laws made by the government for the welfare of workers and journalists are implemented seriously, the issues faced by both groups can be resolved effectively.

Expert trainer Zubair Ashraf, while providing awareness on labour laws to the workshop participants, stated that such training programs empower journalists to defend their rights.

He discussed the prevailing laws for workers and journalists, including the Newspaper Employees Conditions of Service Act, the PEMRA Ordinance, and PECA, saying that knowing these laws allows journalists to better defend themselves.

Senior journalist Shahid Ghazali informed participants about the structure of PFUJ and the struggles journalists and their union is undertaking to raise voice for their rights.

He explained the reasons behind the decline of print media, stating that both print media owners and journalists are responsible. Despite the rise of electronic and social media, print media has not disappeared, and its importance remains intact. He emphasized that we must use social media to revive print media.

Nawabshah Union of Journalists’ General Secretary Ismail Domki introduced the participants, stating that new members will have a lot to learn from such training programs.

During the group discussions, participants showed great interest in the challenges journalists face and presented suggestions for solutions. They expressed that the awareness gained about labour laws from the training was extremely beneficial.

District President of the Pakistan People’s Party Shaheed Benazirabad, Muhammad Salem Zardari, General Secretary Ali Haider Shah, social leader Lala Arshad, and Director of Social Welfare Ghulam Muhammad Sehto were briefed by Shehr Bano and Ismail Domki on the purpose of the training workshop and the issues and demands presented by the participants.

The leaders praised the workshop and assured that they would not only inform the government, especially the leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party, about the issues and demands of journalists, but also make every effort to resolve them.

In the end, certificates were distributed among the journalists who participated in the workshop.
