Imran Khan inaugurates world’s largest Maiyawaki Urban Forest in Lahore

LAHORE: PM Imran Khan has inaugurated the world’s largest Miyawaki Urban Forest here Monday (9th of August, 2021) as part of the monsoon drive under the ten billion Tree Tsunami campaign.  

Speaking on the occasion he said that the endeavor was meant to provide better (pollution-free) milieu to the next generations. PM claimed that for 64 years only 640 million plants had been planted whereas, one billion trees were planted in the KP from 2013 to 2018. The forest that harbors 165,000 plants has been developed over 125 acres. The plants here are expected to grow 10 times quicker than a normal forest owing to the unique Myawaki technique.

Special land preparation, indigenous varieties of plants with varying growth rates are basic components of the technique. It is pertinent to mention here that numerous Miyawaki forests have been completed in different parts of Lahore in order to contain pollution. These plants are geo tagged felicitating the monitoring.

Sharing details of the urban forest with the Media here, Chairman Parks and Horticulture Authority Yasir Gillani said: “We have also developed around 53 Miyawaki forests in different areas of the provincial capital to create sinks for carbon as well as for the better pollution abatement in the city,” he mentioned. Gillani said that more than 500,000 sapling and plants were being planted across the city under the ongoing monsoon tree plantation drive.

Chairman Parks and Horticulture told  that under the door-to-door plants distribution drive in the Metropolis, 50,000 plants would also be distributed. Similarly, Parks and Horticulture workers were also distributing plants among the people on the various city roads under Plant for Pakistan drive. These PHA drives, he opined, would sensitize and encourage the people to play an effective role in making the environment clean and green, thus ensuring a healthy society, citing, “Maximum plantation and greenery ensures a healthy environment.”
