WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden, while commenting on the Kabul fall in a live televised address said that after two decades he had learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces.

In his first comments post-Kabul-fall Joe Biden said that the US mission in Afghanistan was designed to prevent a terrorist attack on US soil and it was never meant to rebuild the country. He pointed out that due to president Donald Trump’s deal with Taliban, US decreased the US troop presence in the nation from about 15,500 to 2,500. Biden further pointed out  that Trump’s deal with the Taliban called for US forces to leave by 1st of  May: “The choice I had to make as your president was either to follow through on that agreement, or be prepared to go back to fighting the Taliban in the middle of the May fighting season.”

Answering to the criticism, he spoke about trillions of dollars that the his country had spent in Afghanistan and those two thousand service members who lost their lives in the conflict: “How many more American lives is worth it?…If anything, the developments of the past week reinforce that ending US military involvement in Afghanistan now was the right decision,” the President held: “American troops cannot and should not be fighting in a war and dying in a war that Afghan forces are not willing to fight for themselves.”

It is pertinent to mention here that he had returned to the White House on Monday 16th of August, 2021. Former US President George W Bush, who incidentally had authorized the military intervention in 2001, stated that he was “watching the tragic events unfolding in Afghanistan with deep sadness… Afghans now at greatest risk are the same ones who have been on the forefront of progress inside their nation.” He warned that any body who attempt to harm their personnel or operation would  be dealt with strictly. | YouTube Channel
