PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Tuesday elected PTI’s Doctor Meher Taj Roghani as a new Deputy Speaker to fill the office, which was lying vacant for the last 14 months.
Meher Taj Roghani won 77 votes defeating opposition party’s Arbab Hayat who gained only 37 votes.
A total of 119 votes were polled in the assembly of 124 MPAs, due to the absence of five legislators.
Dr Roghani was formerly working as the special assistant to chief minister for social welfare.
The seat had fallen vacant after ex-deputy speaker Imtiaz Shahid Qureshi took oath as a provincial minister for law and parliamentary affairs in October 2014.
The election of the deputy speaker was delayed time and again reportedly due to the differences within the PTI on nomination of a suitable candidate for the slot.
