KARACHI: A major power breakdown hit 90 per cent of the metropolis early Friday morning as power transmission lines near Jamshoro tripped, triggering a system failure.

According to KE spokesman, the extra high tension wire of 500KV tripped near Jamshoro, plunging 80 percent of Karachi in the dark.

Sources said Wapda’s 500kv transmission line tripped causing a blast in extra high tension line passing through National Highway.

“A separate 220kv transmission line from Jamshoro has, however, been repaired, and is now supplying power to the K-Electric (KE) system,” the official said. “The transmission lines are part of the NTDC’s transmission system.”

K-Electric says the complete restoration of electricity will take five to six hours.

Initial reports suggested Defence, Clifton, Saddar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Tariq Road, Drigh Road, Gulshan-i-Maymar, Buffer Zone, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Safoora Goth, Steel Shadman Town, Gurumandir, Lasbela, Liaquatabad, Lyari, Ranchore Lines, Shah Latif Town and Federal B Area were among the affected areas.

The power breakdown also affected water supply in some areas.
