Mayoral powers: MQM stages walk out in Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: Lawmakers belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Monday staged walkout in Sindh Assembly, protesting for more powers of Karachi mayor.

As the assembly proceeding begun with Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza in chair, MQM’s MPA Khalid Ahmed presented a private bill in the house seeking more powers for the mayor of Karachi.

MQM has nominated Waseem Akhtar for the mayorship in Karachi after securing majority seats in recent municipal elections.

However, the treasury benches opposed the bill and outrightly rejected it, prompting MQM lawmakers to surround speaker’s chair, chanting “give powers to Karachi” and holding a banner.

The MPAs later walked out of the session.
