Media outlets barred by Pemra from covering proscribed TLP activities

ISLAMABAD: On 28th day of October PEMRA has barred TV channels and all other media outlets from covering any activity of the proscribed outfit Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

An official notification issued by the PEMRA said that the restriction has been imposed under the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015, which prohibits covering proscribed organisations.

Earlier, Information Minister Ch Fawad Hussain had taken to the Twitter to proclaim that until the banned party TLP clears the roads and hands over the cop killers to the relevant authorities there could be no negotiations.

“There is a difference between the protest of political parties and the protest of banned parties. In the past…Noon League and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have run political movements. Those movements were not armed…The first condition for talks with the banned party (TLP) was to clear the roads (which they did not)…

“They are demanding the release of Saad Rizvi. There are 98 cases against him, 6 policemen were martyred and more than 700 were injured. (We cannot just release him.) There is a judicial process that must be followed…

“It had been made clear that unless the (activists of the) banned party clear the streets and the handover the criminals who martyred the policemen to the relevant authorities there can be no negotiations.”

However, undeterred by the government’s warnings, thousands of the TLP activists continued their march towards Islamabad. While on Wednesday 27th of October, Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmed, informed the journalists that (Para Military Force) Rangers had been called in Punjab to contain the agitating members of TLP, Provincial Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has ordered the personnel of LEAs to take all possible measures to maintain peace and tranquility.

Shaikh Shaikh Rashid underscored that the government could not allow anyone to play with the lives and properties of citizens and it is the responsibility of the government to maintain law and order and protect public property and the government would fulfill its responsibility in all circumstances. Interior Minister said all the demands of TLP were accepted but sending the French Ambassador back to France was not possible.

“It is not possible for the government to shut down the French embassy…I told them that the French Ambassador is not even in Pakistan. This shows that they have another agenda,” Interior Minister maintained. He further observed that the TLP had turned into a militant organisation as its members had opened fire on policemen using Kalashnikovs. It may be recalled that clashes against the banned organisation claimed lives of 5 cops since Wednesday 27th of October (2021).
