NEW YORK: New research published in the journal of ‘eLife’ shows that the psychiatric conditions as well as other diseases that attack myelin in human body, can be relieved by altering the gut bacteria of the patient.
Myelin is a protective layer around the nerve cells, which if damaged, affects the neural communication.
“The study provides a proof of principle that gut metabolites have the ability to affect myelin content irrespective of the genetic makeup of mice” said study’s lead author, Patrizia: “We are hopeful these metabolites can be targeted for potential future therapies”.
By altering the patients gut bacteria, Doctors might be able to enhance the functioning of the myelin layer and reduce the depressive symptoms.
