KARACHI: It was in the last three months of 2015 (or the first three months of 2016) that a poor employee of university approached this Media House.
Her problem was that not having CNIC the university administration refused to pay the salary and warned of dismissal.
She was sent to NADRA’s main regional office on Amir Khusro Road. The director there not only saw the poor woman but also advised her apropos fulfilling the legal requirement of relevant documents.
The poor woman duly got the dossier completed and submitted that at NADRA’s Regional Head Office.
She got her CNIC in due course of time with respect and honor without paying a single paisa as bribe.
Thanks to the efficiency of NADRA, that poor soul got her salary from the university and evaded the eminent danger of sacking.
Inspired by this incident, a sting operation was carried out at various NADRA centers in the Port City.
It transpired that due to strictness of the administration at that time, the agent mafia was busted and the relevant NADRA officials served the citizens efficiently and with respect.
There were no queues nor any agent dared to ask for money.
On the contrary, recently an air-conditioner mechanic, while fixing an A/C in the same Media House, complained that firstly his Pakistan-born nephew’s name was put in the alien’s list then an agent at NADRA office demanded Rs. 25,000 to 50,000 for his CNIC.
Another sting operation, conducted by this Media House, revealed that there were no arrangement of chairs or water for the CNIC applicants who were forced to stand for long time in very slow moving queues to enter the NADRA offices.
Due to reemergence of agent mafia often applicants are lured to grease palms to conveniently get their CNIC.
Furthermore, it seems that senior officers have made themselves inaccessible; hence applicants are often misbehaved and misguided by the lower staff and their touts.
Consequently, applicants who can’t pay bribes are made to run from pillar to post in order to get their CNIC made.
It is clear from recent probe that those at the helm of NADRA affairs seven/eight years ago (back in 2015/16) had not only committed their staff to selfless service but also eliminated the agent mafia.
Chairman NADRA would agree that for the convenience of karachiites, the Metropolis’ NADRA centers desperately need strict administration.
