No pardoning in exchange for blood money for those killing in the name of ‘honor’: New Law

KARACHI: Landmark bill, that was passed by joint sitting of the country’s two houses on Thursday (October, 7), ensures that those men killing female members of their family in the name of ‘honor’ will be imprisoned for twenty-five years.

Noting that such murders were committed with the consent of other members of the family, law-makers made sure that those convicted of such murders will not go scot free taking advantage of Islamic Law of khoon baha.

The law strips members of the family of their right to pardon the killers with or without blood money. In the past this practice has facilitated innumerable killers evade punishment.

Former senator Sughra Imam, who introduced the bill, while talking to the NewsPakistan.TV termed the new law a step ahead.

Despite hardliners’ argument that rape can only be proved by testimony of four eye-witnesses, a new law against rape has also been passed aiming at speeding up trials and mandating DNA testing.

However,  critics are dubious about the development. Maintaining that mindset of most of the law-makers is pro ‘honor’ killing, they marvel at the law propounded by them.
