North Sea Collision: Capt Vladimir Motin charged with manslaughter

EAST YORKSHIRE: Vladimir Motin, Captain of the Portuguese-flagged container vessel Solong, appeared in Hull Magistrates’ Court Saturday (15th March, 2025) in connection with the death of a Filipino crew member (38-year-old) Mark Angelo Pernia due to his ship’s collision with the US fuel tanker Stena Immaculate.

British police have charged 59-year-old Captain Vladimir Motin (hailing from Primorsky, Saint Petersburg, Russia) with manslaughter and gross negligence. Since he opted not to ask for bail, he was remanded in police custody.

Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel Solong (carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide) rammed into anchored US-flagged oil tanker Stena Immaculate here on 10th March, 2025 as a result the oil tanker’s jet fuel commenced spilling into the North Sea.

Local Member of the Parliament Graham Stuart also proclaimed that crews of both the ships had been accounted for.

Ambulance service too informed that non of the 37 mariners was hospitalised. However, later it transpired that one crew member of the oil tanker remained unaccounted for. It is pertinent to mention here that the United States-flagged oil tanker, that turned into a fireball following the collision, is one of the ten such vessels the US military utilizes to transport oil during conflicts or emergencies.
