Obama phones Erdogan to discuss Syria war




WASHINGTON: President of the United States Barrack Obama on Thursday telephoned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss the war situation in Syria.

According to a statement issued here by the White House, the two leaders discussed the warfare in Syria and international efforts to defeat Islamic State militants during the phone call which lasted an hour and 20 minutes.

The US President stressed the importance of international cooperation to maintain the cessation of hostilities in Syria.

President Barack Obama voiced his concerns to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the progress on a negotiated political transition in the country.

Obama also told Erdoğan that the U.S. is determined to keep supporting its NATO ally, Turkey, against terror threats and said the U.S. recognizes Turkey’s right of self-defense.

Earlier on Wednesday, Syrian Peace talks had been ended in Vienna without any substantial results.

Foreign ministers of major powers called for a full cessation of hostilities and access for aid.

Earlier on Monday, Kerry called on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Vienna to discuss the importance of promoting the political settlement in Syria.

The World and regional powers gathered together in Vienna in an attempt to overcome stubborn divisions among Syrian factions that have led to the rise of extremists.

A meeting of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) was held on Tuesday in the Austrian capital.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and foreign ministers of more than 20 countries and organizations attended the meeting.
