Afghan kills one, injures 9 with a knife in Lyon (France)

LYON: A 19-year-old boy lost his life while nine others were wounded (three gravely) in a parking lot here today when two men armed with knife and skewer attacked them.

According to details two men, one (a 33-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker armed with a knife) and the other with a skewer, carried out the attack in a parking-lot near the Laurent Bonnevay metro station in the suburb of Villeurbanne. (Several of the city’s metro lines were shut down in the immediate aftermath of the incident.)

The Afghan attacker armed with a knife and a large meat fork, has been arrested following the attack, while the other suspect armed with rotisserie spike is still at large.

Police told that while the arrested Afghan asylum-seeker had provided contradictory information to the authorities, the attack was not believed to be terror-related.

The motive of the attack is still not known. Lyon mayor Gerard Collomb held: “I am extremely shocked by the attack that has just occurred in the Lyon area during which one person died and several others injured, some seriously.

“Being nearby, I went immediately to share my support for the victims, transport workers and the police and relief forces…We have to wait for the conclusions of the investigation. As long as we do not have those conclusions, we can not say anything. We must remain very careful.”

Though so far Police has not dubbed the stabbing as an act of terrorism, Far-Right leader Marine Le Pen grasped at the opportunity to criticize ‘laxness of migration policy’ in France, which she said is a serious threat to the safety of French people.

However,  Villeurbanne’s Socialist (Party’s) Mayor Jean-Paul Bret held that Marine Le Pen But and others on the right and far-right were exploiting things politically: “It’s the classic reaction from the far-right which tries to turn a dramatic event to its advantage,” he added.

Mayor Bret reminded Le Pen that offering asylum to people fleeing conflict in places such as Afghanistan was an international duty that France upheld. He paid tribute to the courage of local people who had helped avert further bloodshed, as well as to the police. It is pertinent to add here that the attacker was cornered by locals and arrested by police.
