OSCAR WINNERS 2018

LOS ANGELES: The 2018 Oscar winners have been announced! Dolby Theatre here is the place to be to see who won big at the 90th Academy Awards including who took home Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress honors at Oscars 2018.

Host of the night Jimmy Kimmel started the night with a riveting monologue, roasting Harvey Weinstein and appreciated the Time’s Up movement. That would be the first of many inspiring speeches as the Oscars 2018 were full of memorable speeches and events.

The live montage titled “In Memoriam” was introduced by host Billy Crystal and featured also the live performance of singer Esperanza Spalding, backed by the South California Children’s Choir. Esperanza sang a restrained and powerful version of “What a Wonderful World” as the clips played.

The audience was asked to hold their applause until after the montage concluded, which they respectfully abided by. This prevented the morbid “applause-meter” phenomenon of years past, which seemed to unwittingly measure one fallen industry person’s popularity against another.

The montage included a number of producers, costume designers, sound technicians and other departed industry folks, in addition to writers, directors and film stars. Among those honored were Whitney Houston, John Heard, Tony Anne Walker, Jane Foray, Robert Osborne, Martin Landau, Glenne Headly, Roger Moore, George A. Romero and Jerry Lewis, Indian cinema icon Shashi Kapoor and India’s first female superstar Sridevi and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who was awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Special Merit Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles earlier this month.

This annual mash-up of cinema’s recently deceased is generally tinted in sepia and accompanied by music. Actor Jennifer Garner introduced the segment by paying tribute to late star Audrey Hepburn. “There is no joy without sorrow,” Garner said, and then acknowledged the loss of film world with the departed souls.

Shashi Kapoor made his debut in Bollywood with the 1961 film Dharmputra after working as a child artist. He passed away on December 4, 2017.

Bollywood’s ultimate ‘charm house’ Shashi Kapoor then went on to make a name by globally  associating with international cinema. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan – the third highest civilian honour – by the Indian government in 2011. In 2015, he was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Sridevi, known for her ability to slip into myriad roles, expressive eyes, sheer comic timing and her fluid dancing skills, died on February 24, 2018. Her death left most of the international community shocked, and saddened.

While leading the Oscars with 13 nominations, Guillermo del Toro’s Shape of Water won four, including best picture. Jordan Peele made history by being the first African American recipient of the Academy award for best original screenplay for Get Out and Blade Runner: 2049 proved yet again how sci-fi can hold its own at the Awards.

The Shape of Water, Frances McDormand, Gary Oldman, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell all had a memorable night.
