Out-dated cosmetics’ can cause dangerous effects on skin: Specialist warned

ISLAMABAD: Skin Specialist Monday warned the public against the use of non-branded and out-dated cosmetics, soaps and detergents, which come from unknown sources and circulate through street vendors and online platforms, as they could contain a considerable amount of bacteria and germs can lead to many skin infections for female buyers.

In an interview, Dermatologist Dr Armeela said female consumers were reporting a number of symptoms after using counterfeit makeup, including eye infections, allergic reactions, skin rashes, swollen lips and chemical burns.

“Using expired or old cosmetics can expose individuals to allergies like skin hypersensitivity, skin redness, and irritation. Use of expired cosmetics can also cause skin pigmentation,” she said.

However, most customers are unaware of the harmful side effects until it’s too late, she mentioned.

It is advisable to use the products in moderation and only when absolutely necessary.

“Some cosmetics products that claim to be sun protective does not protect the skin, but on the contrary, lead to skin burns,” she claimed.

Skin specialist said, “It is crucial to indicate the expiry date and place other forms of information on products.

Using products such as liquid liners and mascara which past their expiry date is another no-no, she said, adding, Makeup once exposed to the air should be thrown out after 2 years.

Highlighting the cosmetic dangerous effects, she further mentioned serious skin conditions including irritation, infection and allergic rashes can all be caused by expired makeup.

Eye makeup should be disposed of after 3-4 months. Since eyeliners and mascaras are directly applied onto the skin and re-dipped into the tube, the tube can breed bacteria and cause eye infections.

Specialist recommended that keep your skin youthful and healthy with natural beauty regimens instead of slathering your face with makeup every day. It’s good to let your skin breathe every once in a while.

Expert believe that older the makeup, easier for the germs to get into it which may cause skin or eye infections.

“Consumers should only purchase cosmetics from trustworthy companies and authorized retailers,” she advised.
