PFUJ -IFJ Provincial Research and Lobbying Project 2024 takes a kickstart

KARACHI: An online inception meeting for the “Provincial Research and Lobbying Project – Phase II” was held on August 24, 2024 on Zoom.

The Project Coordinator, Sheher Bano, convened this meeting to discuss project details with her team from the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and unions of journalists from the targeted areas, including Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Tando Allahyar, and Karachi.

The meeting was attended by representatives from VP-PFUJ from Hyderabad, Junaid Khanzada, Aftan Ahmed, President, Hyderabad Union of Journalists, Mustajabur Rehman, Secretary, Tando Allahyar Union of Journalists, Ghazala Fasih Karachi Union of Journalists, Ismail Domki (Secretary, Nawabshah Union of Journalists, and others.

PFUJ was awarded the “Provincial Research and Lobbying Project- Phase II” this year by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). The project, funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, aims to promote labor rights, gender equality, and freedom of association in Pakistan’s media. PFUJ, an IFJ affiliate, has been working closely with the organization to improve working conditions for journalists in Pakistan.

During the Zoom meeting, the project coordinator discussed the project details and formed the initial team to undertake activities in the targeted areas.

“I believe we should add Mirpurkhas to the project. It’s a newly affiliated unit of PFUJ, and the condition of journalists there is quite alarming,” suggested Junaid Khanzada.

With support from other attendees, Mirpurkhas was added to the project. Now, training sessions will be held in Hyderabad, Nawabshah, Tando Allahyar, Karachi, and neighboring areas, from where journalists will join for training.

After the planning phase, the team will begin work in their respective areas. The Project Coordinator will also finalize questionnaires related to the working conditions of journalists for focused group discussions following before the training sessions start.

As per initial plan, the first training will be held in Mirpurkhas on September 11, 2024 where journalists from the Mirpurkhas city as well adjoining cities will participate. The nest training will be held in Hyderabad and Tando Allahyar and catchment areas on September 12, 2024. After this training will be held in Nawabshah on September 19, 2024. PFUJ and relevant union teams have been informed to do the preparation for the trainings in the respective areas.
