PM visits Kot Lakhpat jail

LAHORE: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday visited Kot Lakhpat jail and announced a reduction in jail sentences of the prisoners across the country by two months.

The prime minister also directed for the constitution of a committee headed by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah that would formulate a comprehensive strategy for the provision of basic facilities to the jail inmates, besides making improvements in the overall system.

Relevant officials from the four provinces would be included in the committee.

On the occasion, the prime minister observed that it was the responsibility of the government to ensure that a prisoner, after his release from jail, should become an efficient citizen of society.

He also specially directed the authorities of Kot Lakhpat jail to utilize all the available resources in an effective manner to meet the basic requirements of jail inmates.

In this regard, the prime minister directed for further improvement in dining and health facilities of prisoners.

He also asked for effective use of skill development resources, so that prisoners could spend time in jail in a positive manner and adequately gear up for playing an effective role in society after completion of their jail terms.

Later, the prime minister also visited Ramazan Bazaar set upon in Johar Town and issued direction for ensuring the provision of edible items at low prices.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Sunday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore and announced a two-month reduction in the sentences of prisoners across Pakistan.

In a series of tweets, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the PM announced formation of a committee headed by Minister for Interior Rana Sanaullah which would develop a comprehensive strategy for welfare of the inmates and improving overall conditions of the prisons.

The committee would comprise officers representing all the four provinces of the country, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif said that all possible patronage was included in the duties of the government to make the prisoners who have completed their sentence, active citizens of the society.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the prime minister urged the Kot Lakhpat Jail authorities to make effective use of available resources for the convenience of the inmates so that their basic needs could be met.

The minister said that the PM also called for steps to further improve kitchen and health facilities of the prison.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that in addition, the prime minister directed for effective use of the available resources for the skill development of the prisoners so that they could complete their sentence in a positive manner and should be fully prepared to play an active role in the society after completion of their terms of conviction.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also paid a surprise visit to the Ramazan Bazaar in Johar Town. On the occasion, he issued directives to ensure supply of food items at cheaper rates during the holy month of Ramazan.
