Police resort to baton charge the protesting farmers at Islamabad’s D-Chowk

ISLAMABAD: Hours before the announcement of Budget 2017-18, the Farmers’ Union registered a protest at D-Chowk area of the federal capital on Friday.

Pakistan Kissan Ittehad – seeking relief in budget 2017-18 – attempted to enter the red zone of the federal capital.

Taking action against the protestors, police fired water cannon and resorted to baton charge to gain control of the situation.

Police also used tear-gas shelling to disperse the protesters who had gathered at D-Chowk, a roundabout just outside Islamabad’s Red Zone, to demand subsidies on fertilisers and electricity bills.

At least 20 protesters were detained. Subsequently, the protesters pelted stone at police personnel. Frontier Constabulary has also been called in to aid the police.
