KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Friday has nominated Karamullah Waqasi for mayor of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.

Sindh’s Minister for Food and Parliamentary Affairs Nisar Ahmed Khuhro made the announcement. He said that the deputy mayor would be announced later.

“The party has named Badar Memon as chairman and Bilal Laghari as vice chairman for Hyderabad district council. Ghulam Mujtaba’s name has been finalized for vice chairman in Thatta,” Khuhro said during a press conference in Karachi.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had released schedule for elections of the local government institutions in Sindh on July 29.

Polling for mayor, deputy mayor, district chairman and deputy chairman would be held on August 24, according to a statement issued by ECP.

Candidates will submit nomination papers from Aug 05 to Aug 08, then the papers will be scrutinized from Aug 08 to Aug 10.

Appeal against the rejection of nomination papers could be filed and decisions on those appeals would be announced on the same day, Aug 13. The candidates could withdraw their papers until Aug 15.

Final candidate list will be released on Aug 18, while results will be announced on Aug 25. The ECP will issue notification of successful candidates, who will later take oath on Aug 30.

Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) dismissed Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s mayor-designate Waseem Akhtar’s request to appear before the returning officer in Election Commission to submit his nomination papers.
