INDIANA: The prolonged use of certain drugs available on prescription could be associated to the cause of dementia and Alzheimer in elderly says a study.
These drugs may include certain hay fever drugs and incontinence treatments, some sleeping pills and anti-depression drugs.
The cognitive tests were conducted on 451 elderly patients who participated in the research led by the team at Indiana University School of Medicine.
The study showed that the prolonged use of these drugs led to notably reduced brain volume, short term memory, verbal reasoning, planning and problem-solving and a biomarker for brain activity that results in Alzheimer’s – the lower level of glucose metabolism in brain.
