Railway Minister should have resigned when train inferno left 70 people dead: CJP

ISLAMABAD: CJP Justice Gulzar Ahmed, heading a three member bench, has remarked here today that Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed should have resigned in 2019 when 70 passengers burnt to death when a train caught fire near Liaquatpur last year.

CJP pointing towards the record asked the minister (who represented the Railways Department): “Can you tell us about the progress you have made in the case? All your records are in front of us…You should have resigned after the train inferno left 70 people dead. Seventy people were burned to death. What is the progress of the investigation into the case?” 

When the minister told that action were taken against 19 people, CJP remarked: “You sacked the gate-keeper and the driver. When will you act against the top officials involved in the incident?

“In my opinion, Pakistan Railways should be closed down. It is better that the department be closed down rather than letting it run the way you are running it,” CJP held.

CJP was hearing a case apropos financial deficit of the Railways Department.  Other members of the bench were Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah.

HYDERABAD: Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has said today that countdown of opposition parties has started after their defeat in the Senate and their politics of confrontation has come to an end.

While talking to media at Kotri railway station, the minister said he had already predicted that Sadiq Sanjrani will retain as Chairman Senate.

Sheikh Rashid vowed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government would soon overcome financial challenges created by previous rulers through loot and plunder of national exchequer.

Replying to a question, he said Pakistan Railways rapidly moving forward to become profitable organization and it had earned Rs.12 billion extra revenue as compared to previous year’s earning.

Sheikh Rashid said now focus was on the development of railway track, adding that 1800 kilometer long Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, would be completed with the help of China during the tenure Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Earlier, Sheikh Rashid arrived Sehwan Sharif from Larkana in special train and visited shrine of Hazrat Qalandar Lal Shahbaz where he laid wreath on the mausoleum and offered fateha.
