Since 2011, Eaton has conquered world events by holding one after the other titles. Commenting on his performance Eaton said: “My throwing has been bad in the past, but I really got after the discus and shot here. Can I do three in a row? Maybe you should ask Daley.”
After winning the title, emotional Eaton burst into tears while embracing his Canadian wife Brianne Theisen-Eaton who secured the bronze medal in the women’s heptathlon.
Damian Warner from Canada claimed bronze with 8,666 points. Upset with the performance, Warner said: “I came here with mindset of gold but there are a lot of tough competitors out there in decathlon. I am proud of myself. I feel like the luckiest athlete in the world.”
