RIO OLYMPICS 2016: Faith Kipyegon bags 1500m Olympic gold for Kenya

AIMAN INAM

RIO DE JANEIRO: Faith Kipyegon from Kenya claimed here an Olympic gold in the women’s 1500m final against Laura Muir from the Great Britain who finished seventh.

Kenyan Kipyegon finished in four minutes 08.92 seconds.  Ethiopian  Genzebe Dibaba timed 4:10.27 while American Jennifer Simpson took 4:10.53 to complete the race. GB Laura Weightman ranked 11th.

23-year-old British record-possessor Muir seemed to be in medal strife at the beginning of the final lap but nodded off the velocity with 200 meters to go. 106045731_laura_sport-large_trans++rWYeUU_H0zBKyvljOo6zlhU--41c5Cba04Sh5SZbNZ8Following her loss, distraught Muir stated, “I went for the win. It’s not every day you find yourself in an Olympic final. I was in great shape but the last 150 meters was not quite in me. “

She further added: “I gave everything and I’m proud of how I ran. I expected it to be a slow start and then for Kipyegon and Dibaba to come round. I expected to have to react. I followed them round but I couldn’t hold on.”
