RIO DE JANEIRO: Caster Semenya from South Africa here has secured an Olympic gold in the 800m edging Great Britain’s Lynsey Sharp out.
25-year-old Semenya made a national record to be successful in one minute 55.28 seconds. Sharp positioned sixth and Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi claimed silver. Whereas, Margaret Nyairera Wambui from Kenya bagged the bronze medal.
Silver medalist in 2012 London Olympics, Semenya cheerfully said: “Every athlete’s dream is to win a medal, especially in the Olympics”.
There have been many questions raised on global media apropos Semenya’s muscularity and her adequacy to participate in women’s events at the Games.
She is coming down with hyperandrogenism, a naturally occurring condition, which increases testosterone levels.
Apropos to this, she confidently maintained: “It is not about looking at people, how they look, how they speak, how they run. It is not about being muscular. It is all about sports. It is out of our control. We rely on people at the top sorting it out.
“They are building your strength. They are making you a better person. People should learn how to unite. Sport is all about uniting people and not discriminating. I feel sorry for them,” she added when asking about the reviewers.
