RIO DE JANEIRO: Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson has won the women’s 100m against the twice victor Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Rio Olympics ground here on Saturday.
“When I crossed the line and glanced across to see I was clear, I didn’t know how to celebrate,” said champion Thompson following the triumph.
24-year-old Thompson has claimed the title in a time of 10.71 seconds. Whilst fellow citizen Fraser-Pryce, 29 has taken the third position in 10.83 seconds and held a bronze medal.
While appreciating the winner, Fraser-Pryce said: “What I’m most happy about is the 100m title is staying in Jamaica. I am on the podium with my training partner. I’m proud of Jamaica.”
Tori Bowie from US has got the fifth rank in 10.90 seconds. 20-year-old Desiree Henry from Britain has remained unsuccessful in the finale and held forth position in 11.09 seconds in the semi-final. She said:”I guess it wasn’t the Olympic ending I was really hoping for in terms of trying to make the final. But I’m proud of myself for growing as an adult and believing that I could run up against these girls and really try make it to the final.”
Asha Philip finished eighth in 11.33 seconds. Pessimistic Philip stated, “I’m not doing as well as I want to be doing, but I’m still at the Olympics and I’ve made a semi-final. I am bitter inside because I came here to at least run a personal best”.
