S Korea to inspect its 101 Boeing 737-800 aircraft

SEOUL: Following the death of 179 people due to crash of budget Jeju Air‘s 15-year-old Boeing 737-800 aircraft, the transport ministry of South Korea proclaimed Monday (30th Dec, 2024) that all the 101 jets of similar models being operated by the country’s airlines (including 39 by Jeju Air) would be inspected to review safety standards.

Jeju Air flight 7C2216, carrying 181 people (175 voyageurs/6 crew) from Bangkok, turned into a fireball while crash landing at Muan International Airport (289km from Seoul) killing all onboard sauf two here at 9am (local time) on 29th Dec, 2024. According to sources the jet’s landing gear malfunctioned, due to earlier bird strike, as a result the plane skidded and collided with a wall when pilots tried to land it on its belly.

A series of explosions followed resulting into death of 179 people onboard. All the passengers were locals (South Koreans) except two foreigners (who were Thai nationals). South Korean budget carrier Jeju Air, commenced its operations fifteen years ago and this happens to be the first accident in its history. Authorities had issued a bird strike warning just 3 minutes before the plane touched the runway.The single-aisle Boeing 737-800 jet, which can seat between 162 to 189 passengers, can fly 260 nautical miles farther and consume 7 percent less fuel while carrying 12 more passengers than the competing model.
