Saving future generations from Thelassemia

KARACHI: To commemorate the Thalassemia Awareness Day (8th of May, 2023) a seminar were organized in Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan Auditorium with the coordination of of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FFUAST) Department of Microbiology and Help International Trust (HIWT).

In his opening remarks, Head of Microbiology department Assistant Professor Sikander Khan Sherwani said that in Pakistan about 100,000 patients are suffering from Thalassemia and every year 5,000 children are born with this deadly disease.

Pharmacist of HIWT Dr. Safina Siddiq said that Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder that occurs when the body is unable to make enough of a protein called hemoglobin, which is an important component of red blood cells.

Another speaker Hasnain Raza of HVP informed about the measures to prevent Thalassemia.

Founder and president HIWT Adil Ahmed Khan said that the incidence of thalassemia is increasing in the country. Every year, 5000 children are born with this disease.

Chairperson Department of Microbiology Dr. Zeba Imran appreciated the continuous efforts of Sikandar Sherwani who always encouraged the youth and scholars to participate in various activities.

Registrar FUUAST Professor Dr. Zareena Ali in her address said that the faculty and administration always organize such healthy seminars and for this she thanked Assistant Professor Sikandar Sherwani.

She added that it is a good practice that if this hereditary disease is tested before marriage because we can save future generations from this disease.

Shields were distributed among the speakers and special certificates were given to the volunteers.

At the end of the seminar, the students held a walk to highlight Thalassemia disease.
