ISLAMABAD: SCP has issued contempt notices to 34 Channels for airing for broadcasting derogatory speeches delivered by independent Senator Faisal Vawda and Mustafa Kamal.
The suo motu contempt of court case was heard on Wednesday (5th June, 2024) by a three-member bench led by CJP, comprising Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Irfan Saadat Khan.
It may be recalled that SCP, that has taken suo motu notice of the issue, is of the view that the court was being threatened by means of proxies like Vawda who threatened at a Presser held at the National Press Club on 15th May (2024) that if any institution was being accused of wrongdoing it should be substantiated with proof.
Vawda went on to say if someone’s turban (sign of respect) was toppled (by the judges) then their (judges’) turbans would be transformed into a football.
While Mustafa Kamal apologized unconditionally for his derogatory remarks against judges (which SCP refused to accept), Vawda in a written statement prayed the court to withdraw the contempt notice.
Vawda maintained that politicians like PM Shehbaz Sharif and Maulana Fazl-ue-Rehman had used the same language against the judiciary but they had never been issued contempt of court case.
