Senate body agrees to raise number of SC judges from 17 to 25

ISLAMABAD: While PTI and JUI-F have vehemently opposed the move saying that the legislation was meant to appoint favourite judges, the Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice agreed to increase the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 25 in order to clear the backlog of cases.

Senator Farook H Naek presided over the meeting, held here on Friday (1st of November, 2024), that agreed to augment the sanctioned strength of SCP judges from 17 to 25.

Opposing the move, PTI Senator Hamid Khan held: “Such a method to appoint SC judges is an attack on judicial independence.”

JUI-F Senator Kamran Murtaza maintained though there was no need to increase the sanctioned strength, the legislation was meant to appoint favourite judges.
