ISLAMABAD: The Peca Amendment Bill has been passed by the Senate here on 28th Jan 2025 (Tuesday).
The bill seeks to penalises anyone who propagates fake news. Such person could be incarcerated for three years or up to fined twenty lakh rupees or both.
Following approvals from the lower and upper houses the Peca Amendment Bill will become law once the President of Pakistan signs it.
The way journalists walked out from the Press gallery of senate the way they shunned the NA Press gallery last week when the bill was tabled.
Meanwhile, Media organisations all over the country took to the streets to protest against the passage of the bill calling it a draconian law.
Police nabs admin of WhatsApp Group: It is pertinent to mention here that, citing violation of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca), Police had nabbed the administrator of a WhatsApp group from Pakpattan on 24th Jan 2025 for uploading an insulting post targeting CM Punjab.
According to FIR dated 19th Jan, the administrator had deliberately uploaded an immoral, insulting post on social media, while knowing that the said post was immoral, offensive and illegal, did not delete it, but rather gave the opportunity to other group members to see the post.
It is alleged that the suspect (admin) was trying to spread chaos among the public. The group admin faces case registered u/s 20 (offences against the dignity of a natural person) of Peca and PPC’s Section 509 (insulting modesty or causing sexual harassment).
