Senate says no to the bill proposing increase in the salaries of Lawmakers

ISLAMABAD: After a fiery debate Senate here today said NO to the bill proposing an augmentation in the salaries of Parliamentarians.

According to details 16 votes were cast in favor of the Chairman and Speaker (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill, 2020, whereas 29 opted to vote against. While MQM-P and PkMAP supported the bill, PPP, PTI and PML-N opposed it pointing towards country’s weak economy. Deputy Chairman and Deputy Speaker (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) (Amendment) Bill, 2020 and the Members of Parliament (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2020 were also rejected by means of a voice vote.

It was said that the salary of parliamentarians was less than that of a grade-17 officer. Nevertheless, maintaining that Pakistan had not yet come out of economic problems NA Speaker Asad Qaiser had termed the proposal unreasonable. The NA speaker had added that a raise in lawmakers’ salaries at this point would put an unnecessary burden on the treasury: “Any suggestion to increase lawmakers’ salaries should only be made once the treasury is able to withstand the additional burden.”
