ISLAMABAD: PM’s Finance and Revenue Advisor Shaukat Tarin has been elected a senator from KP on Monday (20th of December, 2021).
The seat was vacated by Muhammad Ayub Afridi on the directions of PTI leadership to enable Shaukat Tarin enter the Upper House.
It is pertinent to mention here that Constitution dictates that a non-member could remain a minister only for a tenure of six months. Hence getting him elected on Ayub Afridi’s vacated seat was the modus operandi adopted.
The process of casting votes, that commenced at 9am, continued till 4pm sans break. Others vying for the coveted post were ANP’s Shaukat Jamal Ameerzada, JUI-F’s Zahir Shah and PPP-P’s Mohammad Saeed.
PTI, with 94 members in the Provincial Assembly, is the dominating party. JUI-F has 15 members in the KP Assembly that also harbors ANP’s 12 MPAs, PML-N’s 7, PPP-P’s five, BAP’s 4, JI’s 3 and PML-Q’s one members, besides four independents.
Awami National Party’s (ANP) Shaukat Jamal Ameerzada, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Zahir Shah and Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Mohammad Saeed were in the race for Senate seat. Tarin got 87 votes, Ameerzada and Zahid Shah bagged 13 votes each. 23 who opted not to vote probably included PPP-P’s MPAs.
It is now clear that the mini-budget will be presented by Tarin.
