Sindh govt hands over Bagh Ibne Qasim Park to Bahria Town

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Friday took over Karachi’s famous beachside park, Bagh Ibne Qasim from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and handed it over to the real estate development company Bahria Town.

An official notification was also issued in this regard.

The notification reads, “The Local Government Department took over the iconic Bagh Ibne Qasim Park along with Aquarium from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and handed it over to real estate giant Bahria Town for adoption.”

“The existing staff deployed in the park and Aquarium will continue to serve at the same place and the salary of such staff will be paid by KMC,” it added.

Sindh govt decision about Bin Qasim Park is illegal

Meanwhile, Karachi Mayor Waseem Akhtar said he had not been consulted before the handover took place.

“Sindh government’s decision is illegal. Bin Qasim Park is the public property. We would stage protest against the decision,” he said in an interview.

Developed under the supervision of the then city nazim Mustafa Kamal and inaugurated by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2007, the park, spanning 130 acres, gained massive publicity at the time.

However, despite Rs. 600 million spent on it, the park has been neglected for quite a long time.
