Steel cutting of Milgem Class Corvette for Pak Navy held

KARACHI: Steel cutting ceremony of fourth MILGEM Class Corvettes for Pakistan Navy was held at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW), Pakistan.
The event marked an important milestone in the construction schedule for fourth MILGEM Corvette for Pakistan navy.
Pakistan Navy has concluded contract with M/s ASFAT for construction of four corvettes out of which two are being constructed at Istanbul Naval Shipyard whereas, the remaining two at KS&EW.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi said it is a matter of pride to witness the Steel Cutting of fourth Pakistan Navy MILGEM Corvettes at  Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works. He added that it is a historic occasion as Ministry of Defense Production, Pakistan Navy, Karachi Shipyard and M/s ASFAT of Turkey have joined hands for construction of this Corvette.
Chief of Naval Staff further maintained that the event was a defining moment to further cement the bond of friendship between the two strategically aligned nations with common shared values, culture and principles. Chief of the Naval Staff acknowledged the commitment and dedication of KS&EW and M/s ASFAT for meeting the challenging construction schedule despite ongoing global pandemic.
Induction of MILGEM Corvettes will significantly enhance maritime defense and deterrence capabilities of Pakistan Navy. These corvettes will become a core element of Pakistan Navy’s kinetic response to traditional challenges and to maintain balance of power in the Indian Ocean Region.

Main specifications: Displacement: 2,926 tonnes; Length: 108.2 m; Beam: 14.8 m; Draft: 4.05 m; Propulsion: CODAG; Max speed: 31 knots; Range: 3500 nautical miles; Endurance: 15 days at sea; Crew: 93+40.  The propulsion system for all the MILGEM ships consist of one LM2500 gas turbine in a combined diesel and gas turbine configuration with two diesel engines; total propulsion power is 31,600 kilowatts. (MILGEM-class Corvettes will be one of the most technologically advanced stealth surface platforms of Pakistan Navy Fleet. The vessel is equipped with state of the art weapons & modern sensors including S2S/S2A missiles, anti submarine weapons and Command & Control system.).
