AIMAN INAM

NEW DELHI: Research conducted lately here has  noted that several joint-related troubles have been spreading among youngsters due to consumption of muscle-building supplements and steroids.

Steroids and muscle supplements cause osteonecrosis that mostly affects the hips, knees, shoulders, and ankles besides other bones in the joints. Avascular necrosis, Aseptic necrosis and Ischemic necrosis are the types of joint problems it causes.

Head of orthopedics, Manoj Sharma said: “This is emerging as a major health problem for the youngsters. Joint related issues caused due to steroids and muscles building supplements are on rise. In such issues if the surgeries are not performed properly then instead of relieving pain and disability, the situation worsens.”

According to the estimates, 25 percent of the youth using steroids for muscle augmentation suffer  from Avascular Necrosis. If such disorders are not treated on time, it can cause lifetime disabilities.
