ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and the Pakistan People’s Party have expressed reservations over the new tax amnesty scheme announced by the government on Friday.
Speaking to media, PTI chairman Imran Khan said the tax amnesty scheme was an attempt to protect “thieves”. In a bid to bring non-filers into tax net, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the scheme, drawing strong criticism from opposition parties. Critics say the scheme would allow tax payers to turn their black money into white by paying only one percent tax.
“Government has failed to expand tax net, tax amnesty scheme is a proof of NAB’s failure,” said PPP Senator Saleem Mandiwala.
Meanwhile, PTI’s parliamentary party has set up a committee headed by Shah Mehmood Qureshi to put forward recommendations regarding the tax amnesty scheme. Members of the committee include Asad Umar, Jehangir Khan Tarin, Nauman Wazir, Shibli Faraz and Mohsin Aziz.
The parliamentary party was also briefed by a representative of a trader body about the tax scheme. The committee would also contact other political parties in this regard.
